the mid-year book freakout tag

Okay I know I’m late to this but HELLO EVERYONE. I wasn’t tagged but I decided to participate after seeing this tag around the blogosphere. (Also, Jasmine @ Jasmine’s Reading tagged everyone who hasn’t done this tag yet so thank you Jasmine!) I think the tag was originally created by Chami and Ely. And I just wanted to spread some love to bloggers I follow who did this tag so here are some blogs you should check out (I linked to their book tag post!): A Frolic Through Fiction, This Dark MaterialLibrae Paints Pages, Forever and Everly, A Whisper of Ink, Free Perspectives, and Paper Fury.

My Goodreads Reading Challenge Progress

As you can tell, I’m falling behind!!! *whispers* How did this happen?!

Ultraviolet-Kiss-Floral-Watercolor-Collection-THJ-FPTFY-171. best book(s) you’ve read so far this year

I’ve had a pretty good reading year so far because I started ditching books I’m not enjoying. So the books I do finish are usually solid four or five star reads. (Sadly, there are exceptions to this rule.) I read a lot of fantasy and science fiction books this year and they turned into unexpected faves!

I don’t even know where to start when it comes to my love for The Long Way to a Small, Angry Planet. This book has such a beautiful, diverse, cast of characters that take care of each other and it’s completely unlike anything I’ve read before. I am definitely going to be finishing this series. As for Leah on the Offbeat, it was just really cute and perfectly imperfect and the ending made me very happy. There’s a full review coming soon! I also plan to review Let’s Talk About Love which gave me ALL THE FEELS. Sleeping Giants is a sci-fi book that I loved for its unique formatting and cool premise. The plot twists are unpredictable and I couldn’t stop reading. Lastly, The City of Brass is the fantasy that EVERYONE needs to read. It’s complex, full of political intrigue and fascinating creatures (the djinn!!). It’s the kind of book that stayed with me and I often found myself wondering what the characters are up to when I couldn’t fall asleep late at night.

2. best sequel you’ve read so far this year

Turns out I’ve read five or six sequels this year. It was a struggle to narrow it down but I managed (mostly because my memory is giving out on me and I can’t describe all these books without the help of Goodreads).

The Evolution of Mara Dyer is the first book I read this year and it was amazing. This series is just so freaking weird, it’s hard to describe or explain (and also I don’t want to spoil it for you guys). Mara is THE unreliable narrator of the century and it’s so trippy reading this book because it’s hard to figure out whether the things that are happening are real or not. Also Noah is another character I have a huge crush on.

I love Waking Gods but it’s hard (for me at least) to talk about this book without dropping fifty spoilers so just going to say that I highly recommend this series!

The Subtle Knife is the second book in the His Dark Materials series and honestly, I feel like this series gets stranger with every book. There are angels and witches and a knife that can cut through anything (literally ANYTHING). I liked seeing Will and Lyra’s friendship develop over the course of this novel and I just love fierce, brave, Lyra so much. She fights tooth and nail for her friends and her loyalty is impressive.

Ultraviolet-Kiss-Floral-Watercolor-Collection-THJ-FPTFY-173. new release you haven’t read yet, but want to

Erm…there are A LOT of new releases I haven’t gotten around to reading yet but DESPERATELy want to so I tried to prioritise. The key word is TRIED. I’m going to read all of these books as soon as I can. VERY SOON.

4. most anticipated release for the second half of the year

Once again, I was like HOW DO I EVEN PICK?!? So I went down my mental list of favorite authors and happily remembered that they have books coming out this year!! I’m so excited to read these and fall in love with them and hug them (books need love and affection too okay!!).

5. biggest disappointment

Um I feel awkward saying this when Marie Lu is one of my favorite authors (I loved the Legend series!!) but Batman: Nightwalker was a bit of a let down. I wrote a review talking about why I felt that way. MY DNF shelf on Goodreads has been steadily growing over the last few years and that’s because I added the rest of the books above to it. I feel like this may as well be a book tag where I express unpopular opinions because I know Caraval is an very popular book. I might give it another shot later but for some reason, I couldn’t get into it and I found myself bored. I had the same problem with Heartless. I was pretty disappointed by Wild Beauty because I love Anna-Marie McLemore’s other books and I expected to fall in love with this one too. Instead, I found myself confused and the book was too slow-paced to hold my interest.

6. biggest surprise

8667848

A Discovery of Witches is a dense book. When I flipped through it and skimmed a few pages, I found it hard to believe that I would enjoy it. I also don’t usually read adult fantasy novels but I was intrigued by the Goodreads blurb. And well, it turned out to be complicated and slow (so basically a book I would DNF under normal circumstances) but I..actually enjoyed reading it a lot. This is one of my favorite books of the year (I know I didn’t mention it above but I’m trying to avoid being repetitive and talking about the same books all the time).

7. favorite new author (debut or new to you)

The Golden Compass was published four years before I was born but Philip Pullman is an author whose work I just discovered this year. I love the His Dark Materials series so much, it’s so fascinating and complex. It’s everything I expect in good fantasy. The same can be said for The City of Brass

8. newest fictional crushes

I genuinely thought this list would be longer but ah well.. I think it’s just proof that I need to read more!! (And also, I did mention two fictional crushes I had last year because they were renewed in intensity this year when I read other books in the series.)

  • Takumi from Let’s Talk About Love // I’m reading this book right now and every time his character shows up, I’m just making HEART EYES and swooning. He sounds incredible and I just wish I could meet him in real life!!
  • Noah from The Evolution of Mara Dyer // He’s awesome. Enough said.
  • Warner from Restore Me // Like I would hate to separate him from Juliette because they’ve always been the best power couple BUT I have a crush. * sigh *
  • Dara from The City of Brass // He’s all mysterious and brooding. Basically he sounds perfect.

9. newest favorite character

I thought I would have more favorite characters but…here we are.

  • Nahri from City of Brass // She’s brave and I really admire how she takes things in stride. She’s thrown into this new world with different rules when she arrives at Daevabad but doesn’t let it deter her. Her character realistically develops over the course of the book and I related to her because she never has all the answers or knows what to do (which is how I feel sometimes!) so she just tries her hardest…and hopes things will work out!
  • Laylee from Whichwood // Whichwood is one of the few middle grade books I read this year and I enjoyed reading it so much. I related to Laylee’s loneliness because I had few friends when I was her age (thanks to changing schools!). But this book reminded me again of just how powerful and healing friendships can be.

10. book that made you cry

I don’t usually cry over books so…this was hard to answer. Anil’s Ghost was a book I read for English class and it was definitely an unexpected fave. This book hit me so hard. Whichwood also made me cry. Not as much as Anil’s Ghost but there were a few moments where I really felt for Laylee.

11. book that made you happy

31625039

I finished reading Let’s Talk About Love and I was smiling so much my face hurt. Alice and Takumi GIVE ME LIFE. Alice is working through some things and there are some heavy moments but despite all that, Let’s Talk About Love is a book that made me squeal and giggle. (Sidenote: PLEASE recommend more books like it to me if you read it too!) Ultraviolet-Kiss-Floral-Watercolor-Collection-THJ-FPTFY-17

12. favorite book-to-movie adaptation you saw this year

__5adf61893dcd4.jpg

I know Love, Simon is the most popular answer to this question but I haven’t seen that many adaptations this year. (Also, Shadowhunters (the TV show) was pretty good and it’s based on the Mortal Instruments series by Cassandra Clare. Magnus and Alec are my favorite fictional couple so I just had to mention it.)

13. favorite review you’ve written

25494343

I’ve only published five or six blog posts this year so far (including this one) and two of those posts were reviews. So I chose my review of Lady Midnight from last year because this is a series I absolutely love and I’m still surprised I managed to organize my thoughts into some kind of coherent review.

Ultraviolet-Kiss-Floral-Watercolor-Collection-THJ-FPTFY-17

14. most beautiful book you’ve bought so far this year (or received)

9307699.jpgI usually buy ebooks to read on my Kindle but I love the cover of my physical copy of The Book of Dust, which I’m definitely going to read as soon as I finish the His Dark Materials series. I’m almost done with it!! ALMOST THERE.

15. what books do you need to read by the end of the year?

UM THIS IS A LONG LIST. Like a really long list. Please refer to my answer to the question about new releases I want to read because those are all books I intend to read. But here are some more!! (Please feel free to comment below and suggest which of these I should read!)

talk to mewhat are the books you absolutely fell in love with and can’t stop thinking about? are you keeping up with your goodreads reading challenge? who are your favorite characters? who are your latest book crushes? tell me everything!! (and thank you for reading this super long post!)

  1. I’m dying to read City of Brass *heart eyes* It’s a bummer you didn’t like Wild Beauty, another book I’m desperate to get my hands on. I’ve heard it has a bisexual character? So yeah, definitely in need of the rep!

Muse of Nightmares is yet another book I’d give a hand to have hahaha

Spinning Silver is one of my favourite reads of the years, so I’m really hoping you’ll come to love it as well!

I kept my Goodreads challenge at a low number this year which I’ve happily surpassed! Mmm one book I’d recommend you is Heart of Mist by Helen Scheuerer! I did re-read of book one since I have to review book two, Reign of Mist. I think you’ll enjoy it 🙂

    1. Ooh yes I hope you love City of Brass! It’s great to hear you completed your GR challenge! Heart of Mist sounds interesting, I’ll make sure to check it out. Thank you for the book recommendation & dropping by. ❤

  2. The Astonishing Color of After and The Way You Make Me Feel were both really good reads. Haven’t gotten to Children of Blood and Bone yet either. I keep telling myself it feels more like a Fall book 🙂 but that could just be me excusing my procrastination. Enjoy your reading!

    1. Ooh both of those books seem really good! I’m excited to read them! Oh that’s so relatable haha. I’m always putting off reading books because I’m not in the right ‘mood’ but that’s okay. I’m sure you’ll enjoy it when the time does come that you read it! Thank you for stopping by my blog, I hope you have a great reading month! 🙂

  3. *whispers* I was also disappointed by Caraval when I read it, you’re not alone. I think it suffered from being hyped too much so my expectations were too high — I’d have liked it more if I’d been expecting less!

I’m also really psyched for Muse of Nightmares and Queen of Air and Darkness! I think I might have to work out a fairly strict book budget or this autumn will bankrupt me, though…

    Liked by 1 person

    1. *whispers back* That’s a relief! And yes I agree with you that there was a lot of hype surrounding it and that led to high expectations.

Oh I totally relate – it’s hard to know what to buy when so many amazing books are being released at once! I’m the kind of bookworm who loves to buy books as soon as they’re released (which is also when everyone is hyping them haha) but this means I buy way too many books and sometimes I don’t even get around to reading them all. Do you struggle with this too?

      Like

      1. I hardly ever buy books new, actually, unless they’re by authors I really really love. I read most things from the library and then buy them later (usually in paperback) if I like them. I’m very short on shelf space (and money) so it’s the only way. I buy more books than I used to, and I also buy more ebooks (def don’t get around to reading all of those) but still not that many. Once I have a job and money that might change though…

        Liked by 1 person

      2. Ohh okay. Yeah that makes a lot of sense! Tbh I don’t usually reread books so if I’ve already read something (borrowed from the library or otherwise), I won’t bother buying a copy. I don’t have much shelf space either. But yay for ebooks! I’ve wasted so many hours on Amazon hunting for discounted ebooks haha. I just tend to fall down a rabbit hole of new releases. Well I hope you can buy more books once you get a job! 🙂

      3. I reread compulsively and read very fast, so if I bought everything I wanted to read I’d drown in books. Which is, yunno, not a bad way to go, but probably best to stick with my current policy for now 😂 I have a terrible memory so have to reread books if I want to know what happened.

        Liked by 1 person

      4. Good point haha. Well if it works for you, then that’s great! Oh yea there are definitely some books I’m thinking of rereading because I know I loved them but I can’t remember specific things about the plot or the character. But then there are so many other books out there waiting to be discovered and read…I’m too indecisive lol.

  4. Okay, I am definitely adding The City of Brass to my to be read list. It kind of reminds me of City of Stairs (haha yea, partly because of the title but also because of the premise). Do you know of that book? It’s SO GOOD. One of the best fantasy books I’ve read. Also, what kind of format does Sleeping Giants have? Oooh, favorite characters. Some from this year are Lockwood in the Lockwood & Co. series, Jane Fairfax in Emma, and Howl in Howl’s Moving Castle. Latest book crush: SYDNEY CARTON. This answer kind of surprises me because I have to read A Tale of Two Cities for summer reading, but oh my goodness, Sydney Carton. Also Howl is 100% a book crush too.

    Liked by 1 person

    1. YAY I’m so happy to hear you’re going to read City of Brass!! This is my first time hearing of City of Stairs, I will look it up! Well Sleeping Giants is made up of a bunch of ‘files’ so the story is told through transcripts interviews with various characters that are integral to the plot, transcripts of recordings, etc. I found that it just makes the book even more suspenseful. Ooh a friend mentioned that Lockwood & Co is one of her favorite series! This is only my second time hearing someone mention it though. And I love Howl! I haven’t read the book but I watched the movie last year. I’ve got to admit, I had a crush on Howl too haha. 😀 It’s lovely to hear from you Annie!

      Liked by 1 person

      1. AH, I hope you find the description of City of Stairs interesting! Oh, the way Sleeping Giants is set up reminds me of the Illuminae Files. I think it’s very creative when authors do that, but I actually just prefer boring paragraph format. I always find myself skipping the unique formatting parts when books have them. Oooh, cool! Yea, I haven’t heard that much about the series either, but the first book was so good. HOWL Oh right, the movie! Is it good?

        Liked by 1 person

      2. Well I actually feel like the formatting of Illuminae Files is way more..wild?? I’m not sure what the right word to describe it is but you’re right that those two books series are a bit similar in that sense. Hmm I find that books that do it well are even more engaging. Yeah I really liked the movie! I saw it awhile back after my friend recommended a bunch of Studio Ghibli movies to me. 😀

        Liked by 1 person

      3. Oh, interesting! I can completely see why uniquely formatted books would suck you in even more. Okay, cool! The movie’s on my to be watched list. Have you watched any other Studio Ghibli movies yet? A friend told me Spirited Away which is by them (I think) is very good.

        Liked by 1 person

      4. Yes I’ve seen quite a few of them! Omg Spirited Away is INCREDIBLE. Other favorites of mine are Howl’s Moving Castle, My Neighbor Totoro, and Kiki’s Delivery Service! These movies are just wonderful & I really wish I’d seen them all when I was younger because they make the world seem like a brighter & more hopeful place. I know I’m rambling but yeah, I love them! 🙂 And I hope you’ll enjoy them too.

  5. I also loved Leah on the Offbeat! And Love, Simon of course 😉 I have a ton of the same books as you on my tbr—I’m sooo excited for The Brightsiders and Children of Blood and Bone. I haven’t read Wild Beauty, but I read When the Moon Was Ours by the same author, and I felt similarly to you—it was really beautiful but confusing and kinda slow. :/

    Liked by 1 person

    1. Hey Annie! Yay you enjoyed Leah on the Offbeat too! Ooh that’s great to hear haha. Hmm yes, When the Moon Was Ours could be confusing. I remember liking that about it though because it was just what I felt like reading at the time.

  6. This is such a lovely post! Thanks for so many new book recs (especially The Furthermore books, I’m always looking for a good middle grade; Let’s Talk About Love (as a grey ace person I’ve been looking for more books with ace rep and had never heard of this one); City of Brass!! your description of staying up thinking about the characters got to me).

The Long Way to A Small Angry Planet got me out of a reading slump and partially inspired me to start my blog so I’m always happy to hear about other people who love it. ❤

And I have all the same lol on my new release hope-to-read list, especially Girl Made of Stars. And I /hope/ to get to Emergency Contact before July is over but we'll see!

    1. Thank you Shai! I’m really glad you discovered more books to read through my blog post. I could talk for hours about how amazing Furthermore and Let’s Talk About Love and City of Brass are but I’ll let you find out for yourself haha. Well I think I’ve seen reviewers who are ace saying that the rep is good in Let’s Talk About Love and I really hope you enjoy it.

It’s really cool that The Long Way to A Small Angry Planet inspired you to start your blog! I wonder why more bloggers don’t talk about it. I actually picked it up after seeing someone fangirl about it on twitter but anyway, it deserves more hype!

Ooh I started Emergency Contact and I like it so far! I hope you get to read it soon too. 🙂

  7. I am so happy you loved Mara Dyer, I love this series so, so much. I’m also really glad to see you enjoyed the second book in the His Dark Materials series, this series is one of my favorites of ALL times ❤ ❤
I can't wait for you to read Emergency Contact '(favorite of mine) and Final Draft (loved this one so much!). I hope you'll love them as much as I did 😀 I am also really anticipating Wildcard, I can't wait to see what happens next 😀
Lovely answers for this tag! ❤

    1. Yes I binge-read the series over winter break and it was the best decision haha. Ooh my friend recommended His Dark Materials to me (and I hadn’t really heard of it before) but since then, I’ve discovered that I’m a bit late to this party lol. Everyone seems to love this series. ALSO i started reading Emergency Contact!! I love it so far!! I’m going to borrow Final Draft from the library too (if it’s available) because you have excellent taste in books, Marie. And thank you! I really appreciate you taking the time to read it and comment. ❤

AND YAY ahhhhh this makes me so happy – I can't wait to hear your thoughts on both Emergency Contact and Final Draft, both were incredible for me ❤

I’m halfway through Emergency Contact now. I admit it’s not totally meeting my expectations but it’s still pretty good!

  8. I literally just finished Caraval and cannot believe it’s so popular. I gave it 2/5 stars on Goodreads because I felt like the whole book was confusing (and not in a good way)! You definitely need to read Emergency Contact though ❤ It was a nice feel-good book that also talked about series topics. I also seriously need to read Children of Blood and Bone :O and I'm really looking forward to Queen of Air and Darkness!! I need my Jules and Emma ^_^

Lovely tag, and I loved reading all your answers~

    1. Hey Tiffany! I’ll admit I’m kind of relieved to hear I’m not the only one who wasn’t a huge fan of Caraval. I really wanted to enjoy it more. Oh I started reading Emergency Contact today!! I’m really enjoying it so far. I actually relate to Penny because I’m going to be studying creative writing in college. YES Jules and Emma!! I miss them so much. Sometimes I reread a few pages of Lady Midnight or Lord of Shadows because I miss the characters soo much..but also I don’t want to commit to a full reread haha. Thank you so much! I know the post is super long and I’m touched that you read the whole thing. ❤
