the mid-year book freakout tag

Okay I know I’m late to this but HELLO EVERYONE. I wasn’t tagged but I decided to participate after seeing this tag around the blogosphere. (Also, Jasmine @ Jasmine’s Reading tagged everyone who hasn’t done this tag yet so thank you Jasmine!) I think the tag was originally created by Chami and Ely. And I just wanted to spread some love to bloggers I follow who did this tag so here are some blogs you should check out (I linked to their book tag post!): A Frolic Through Fiction, This Dark MaterialLibrae Paints Pages, Forever and Everly, A Whisper of Ink, Free Perspectives, and Paper Fury.

#CakeFlavouredBooks Tag

Holland

Hello everyone!

So last month, Cait @ Paper Fury did a #CakeFlavouredBooks Tag (which is taken from #bookstagram btw) and made me very hungry. Today, I’ve decided to join in on the fun and try it too!

(Quick note: all images of cake were taken from Unsplash, StockSnap.io, or Pexels. Some images link to the original photographer. And I’m sorry if the cake was not accurately chosen!)

MID-YEAR BOOK FREAK OUT TAG

mid-year-book-freak-out I was tagged by Jess @ Princessica of Books to do the Mid-Year Book Freakout Tag. Sooo here I am! My Goodreads challenge goal was to read 250 books this year and so far I’ve managed to read 132 (you can see what I’ve read here). A majority of those books are YA novels but I’ve also managed to binge-read quite a lot of comics.

1. Best book you’ve read so far in 2015.

This is tough! 2015 has been such a great year so far (in terms of reading) because I’ve enjoyed so many of the books I’ve read. I’d probably go with A Court of Thorns and Roses by Sarah J. Maas or A Darker Shade of Magic by V. E. Schwab.

2. Best sequel you’ve read so far in 2015.

The Winner’s Crime by Marie Rutkoski. I’ve been reading a lot more new releases (which are often the first book in a series) or standalones so I haven’t been reading that many series.

3. New release you haven’t read yet, but want to.

Okay I have tons of new releases I want to read but fine..I’ll pick a couple. Delicate Monsters by Stephanie Kuehn and Wicked by Rhiannon Thomas are on the top of my “books to buy ASAP” list.

4. Most anticipated release for the second half of the year.

Queen of Shadows by Sarah J. Maas. I actually haven’t even started Heir of Fire yet (mostly because it’s SO LONG and I’m not feeling like committing). But I’m planning on reading Heir of Fire sometime soon because I want to finish it during the holidays when I have plenty of time to read.

5. Biggest disappointment.

The Murder Complex by Lindsay Cummings or Alienated by Melissa Landers. The premise for both books seemed great but the actual books weren’t quite so great..

6. Biggest surprise.

The Kite Runner by Khaled Hosseini. The book was assigned by my Humanities teacher and (for the most part) I find books assigned at school to be a bit boring. Fortunately, I ended up enjoying The Kite Runner.

7. Favorite new author.

V. E. Schwab! Technically she’s not new but I only got around to reading her books this year.

8. Newest fictional crush.

TAMLIN from ACOTAR!!! (he’s mine ladies, back off!)

9. Newest favorite character.

Simon from Simon vs The Homo Sapiens Agenda.

10. Book that made you cry.

Few books have the ability to make me cry. But I Was Here by Gayle Forman really wrecked me. Oh gosh you guys, that book reminded me why I read (to experience the world through the eyes of different characters).

11. Book that made you happy.

The Girl at Midnight by Melissa Grey. It’s a unique fantasy book that features awesome characters and I was just shipping everyone. It was awesome.

12. Favorite book to film adaptation you saw this year.

The Maze Runner! I really enjoyed the book and I was worried the adaptation would suck. BUT I ended up loving it! The special effects were amazing and I was so happy to finally get to “see” what I’d read and obsessed over so long ago.

13. Favorite post you have done so far in this year.

Probably the Beautiful People :: July Edition post. For a while now, I’ve really wanted to talk more about my writing on this blog but I was wrestling with some self-doubt. Publishing that post felt like a big step for me because I was finally ready to share that part of my life on this blog. I don’t know why it was such a huge deal to me because I’ve been posting work on writing websites like Figment and Wattpad but my blog has always gotten more readers/views/etc. than my profiles on those websites probably do..So I was nervous.

14. Most beautiful book you’ve bought so far this year.

22840182

15. What books do you need to read by the end of the year?

I’m trying to get through a lot of my “most anticipated” releases for 2015 because I just like knowing what’s going on (especially since many of them have tons of hype surrounding them). So yes I have books like Winter by Marissa Meyer and Heir of Fire by Sarah J Maas on my list but I’m a mood reader so I’m always re-organizing my tbr for the week every week.

Who I Tag:

YOU if you want to do it!

So what do you guys think? Would you have answered differently to any of these questions? Do you agree or disagree with me? Tell me in the comments!

I’d Love To Visit Randomocity!

I was tagged by Christina Im @ Fairy Skeletons to do The Tag of Randomocity. Christina is an amazing writer (I’m not exaggerating people!) and if you haven’t already checked  out her blog, what are you waiting for?!? DO IT!

a9307-6c41f-thank2byou2bfor2bsaving2bthe2bbutton2c2bdear2b3b-p

the rules

  • Paste the button onto your blog post.
  • Leave a new list of questions (or just pass on the question list you answered) and tag a few people of your random choice (and say why you tagged them, if you have time)! (Be original and nonsensical and disastrously random!)
  • Write down three facts about you – one of them is WRONG. Let your commenters guess in the comments which one is wrong (and tell them in the comments after a while)
  • Answer the questions of the person who tagged you – make it all super random and interesting.

two truths and a lie

  • I am a very very picky eater (who also happens to be vegetarian).
  • I’ve lived in three different countries: India, Japan and Hong Kong.
  • My favorite colors are pink and black..Don’t make me choose between them!

a bunch of questions..and random answers

What is one food that you can (do?) eat mountains of because you love it so?
I happen to love Italian, Thai and Indian food..but if I were to eat mountains of anything, I’d probably go with (Thai) green curry. But it can’t be spicy because I’m a wimp when it comes to eating spicy food.

If you were a Traveler Without Roots, would your home be a train car, an RV, a hot air balloon, a boat, or just a pack on your back? Or maybe another option completely?

Well I can get seasick (so no boat) and I’m scared of heights (so no hot air balloon). Just a pack on my back sounds pretty rough. I guess I’ll have to go with the train car. But the train car would have to be pretty damn fancy (as in it has a private swimming pool and/or a jacuzzi).

Name a celebrity you wish you could spend one day with.

CASSANDRA CLARE!! I love her books and writing so much..and in my head: author = celebrity so I’m technically not being a rebel.

What fictional character’s house would you like to have as your own?

This question just made me realize that I really don’t pay that much attention to characters’ homes… But now that I think about it, I do remember always wanting to live in Mr. Tumnus’ home in Narnia. It always seemed so cozy and nice (although I think it gets trashed later in the book…but I’m sure I could find someone to get cleaned up for me.)

If you could take a class in ANYTHING what would it be?

I’d love to learn html coding because that would help me make a better theme for my blog. I’ve tried to learn how to code before (but I always ended up getting bored and giving up). I just feel like if I joined a class, then I would have to keep at it (and I wouldn’t be able to quit) so I’d eventually learn something useful.

Name a childhood obsession. TV show, stuffed animal, book, food, pastime—anything.

I remember being extremely obsessed with fairies. I even had a friend who would help me “hunt” for them and I remember her telling me she had pixie dust that could make her fly. (I believed her.) Weirdly enough (or maybe it’s not that weird) my love for magic and fairytales and dragons didn’t fade and I still love to write and read about them.

What do you think would be an awesome theme for a party?

I’d love to go to a costume party where people dress up as fantastical/legendary/mythical creatures.

Have you been in any clubs/groups in your lifetime?

Quite a lot but this year I was only part of the school newspaper and the creative writing club.

What’s something you have to buy all the time that you wish you could just have an endless supply of (something that’s always the same thing—no books or movies!)?

Well I was going to say books but oh well.. I’d love to have an endless supply of pens (I still haven’t settled on a kind I love but I’ll let you know when I figure it out).

What park (national/amusement/theme/etc) would you choose to visit?

I hate rollercoasters because I’m scared of heights but I like amusement parks just because I get to engorge myself on icecream, cotton candy, and other sugary foods. But it is a bit of a waste to visit an amusement park if you don’t go on any of the rides, so in stead, I’d love to visit Harry Potter studios.

777 Challenge

I was tagged by Brett Michael Orr, a month ago, and I truly intended to do this challenge sooner but I forgot. I know that’s not much of an excuse but I was traveling too! Anyway, I’m going to share 7 lines from the 7th page of my current (unfortunately unfinished) WIP (The Good, The Bad, The Inbetween) and then tag 7 other bloggers. The snippet below is taken from the first chapter which can be found here.

7 Lines from TGTBTI

This might sound sappy…and kind-of stupid but when Shawn died I felt like a part of myself died. He was my best friend but of-course (I’m a total cliche, I know), I was in love with him. Normally I’d recoil at the thought of hitting on a guy who thinks of you as his sister..but everything just seemed to click when I hung out with him. Of-course I knew it was going to be unrequited love. If he would hook up with anyone, it would have to be Sindhu – the shy pretty perfect Indian girl. Anyway, I think unrequited love is sort of my “thing” if you know what I mean. But even after finding out Shawn was gay, I kept hoping that he was actually bisexual and didn’t know it. Maybe he just hadn’t met a girl he liked yet. I mean people find out things they didn’t know about themself all the time. Right?

A Popular Book or Series That You Didn’t Like

19063

I actually got so bored, I stopped reading about halfway through this book. That was a few years ago but I haven’t tried it again since because I’m pretty sure my taste in books hasn’t changed that much.

Popular Book or Series that Everyone Hates But You Love

Panic_HC_JKT_des4.indd

Now that I think about it…I’m kind of realizing that I mostly “follow the crowd” in terms of what I read. Most of the books I’ve read have such good avg ratings on Goodreads…except for Panic by Lauren Oliver. I’m not sure if it counts as a popular book but Lauren Oliver is a New York Times Bestselling Author..so there’s that! I loved this book so much but the avg rating on Goodreads is pretty low at a 3.57 (but I gave it 5 stars).

Popular Book Genre You Hardly Reach For

I will have to agree with the folks at Novel Ink and say Historical Fiction. (History is also my least favorite subject.)

A Popular or Beloved Character that You Didn’t Like

6931356

I did not like Bianca’s character (and I DNF the book).

A Popular Author that You Can’t Seem to Get Into

13574417

There was so much hype about this book and so when I finally did get around to reading it… I was pretty disappointed! The author’s writing style also wasn’t really working for me.

A Popular Book Trope that You’re Tired of Seeing

Probably the “evil/clingy/psycho/jealous/stalkish ex-girlfriend” trope. It would be great to see more stories where the break-up doesn’t mean the end of any positive relationship between the boyfriend and girlfriend.

A Popular Series that You Have No Interest in Reading

13496A Game of Thrones has amazing ratings on Goodreads but for some reason, I just don’t feel interested in reading it. That might change, I guess, but for now I know it’s not going on my tbr.

Show/Movie Adaption that You Liked Better Than the Book

6931356There are few cases where this happens to me but in case, I found the movie a lot more interesting to watch. I still didn’t like the character but she seemed like a toned down version of Bianca in the book. There is also so much less sex which is what annoyed me in the book. I mean, not all teens are super horny!

#WritersLife Tag

writerslife tag

I know I don’t talk too much about my writing life on this blog but I thought it might be fun to try this (especially since I’ve been avoiding my novel because I’ve come across one too many plot-holes). [Btw, I found this tag here!] So let’s do this!

Write Fuel: What do you eat/drink while writing?

Usually nothing because I can’t multitask.  I prefer to watch youtube or tv shows while I snack. Sometimes I do write while I eat because I’m feeling inspired (but it could be anything from fruit to cereal).

Write Sounds: What do you listen to while writing?

Nothing. I can’t focus okay! I’ve tried, so many times, to listen to music while I write but I just can’t. It prevents me from getting caught up in the scene and in first drafts, especially, I don’t like to be emotionally distant. I just try to get all the words out and music becomes a distraction. Sorry Charlie

tumblr_inline_nox4nw96nd1s6lw3t_500

Write Vice: What’s your most debilitating distraction?

TWITTER!!! I can’t resist tweeting to all the cool people…and forgetting to work on my WIP (which at this rate will never be finished)!

Write Horror: What’s the worst thing that’s ever happened to you while writing?

Umm nothing.. I guess I’ve lost a few hundred words (at-least) of my writing before thanks to my laptop or something crashing but it’s never been so bad that I will remember it forever.

Sorry-to-disappoint-Disappointing-Disappoint-GIFWrite Joy: What’s the best thing that’s ever happened while writing or how do you celebrate small victories?

I can’t think of a “best thing” so I’ll tell you how I celebrate…by telling my parents. And that’s it folks. Sometimes I tell my friends but mostly I just think about it and use it to boost my morale when I’m feeling down. I guess I’m hoping to do something a lot more dramatic like throw a party when I have a big victory and right now I’m just biding my time.

Write Crew: Who do you communicate with or not communicate with while writing?

Well my friends are usually like.. you’re writing again? Like I ever stopped!? (Just kidding, I have a hiatus every few months.) So sometimes I communicate with my friends – mostly not about the writing I’m doing (don’t ask why!). I guess it just depends on my mood. I’m complicated like that. But it would really be great if I had writer friends, in real life, who I can hang out with and maybe even collaborate on something. (Soo I guess that means the gif below, doesn’t apply to me…but a girl can dream okay!)  tumblr_static_perks

Write Secret: What’s your writing secret to success or hidden flaw?

Writing secret?! Pfft. I’ll tell you guys once I get one but for now, I’ve found that getting my thoughts out usually works. Sometimes I find my story/novel/poetry/book/whatever taking a new turn when I do this because it’s kind-of like brainstorming. Most of the time, I end up with something I can work with and I wield the red pen with no mercy.

Write-spiration: What always makes you productive?

People talking about what they’re writing makes me want to write because I feel guilty (for not writing) and jealous (that they’re actually WRITING). Reading a really good book can also do the trick but those can be hard to come by when you’re a reviewer who criticizes 80% of what she reads. THERE IS NO PLEASURE READING PEOPLE. Just kidding! I always read for pleasure.

Write Peeve: What’s one thing writers do (or you do) that’s annoying?

I’m going to have to agree with the bloggers at Bookshelf Corner on this one. I’m always looking too far ahead into the publishing process and getting excited at the thought of querying and pitching and actually publishing my book…when I should be focused on writing and finishing the damn book!

Dean-is-annoyed

Write Words- Share one sentence from a project. Past or present.

“I don’t know how much time passed while I leaned against the wall, staring at the dead body of my best friend.” This line is from my current WIP: The Good, The Bad, The Inbetween. (Don’t worry, it’s not a spoiler..I think.)

I hope you guys enjoyed this tag! Feel free to comment below with links to tags you’ve done lately.

The Courtship Book Tag

The Courtship Book Tag I saw this tag at Thoughts and Afterthoughts and decided to give it a go!

Phase 1 – Initial Attraction: A book that you bought because of the cover

A good book cover is enough to make me read the blurb but I usually try not to buy books solely based on the cover (and most of the time, it doesn’t matter anyway because I buy on Kindle) …But I bought a hardcopy of Teardrop by Lauren Kate because the cover was pretty and I was in a hurry. It’s been half a year but I haven’t gotten around to finishing it..Lesson learned! 16070143

Phase 2 – First Impressions: A book that you got because of the summary

18667779

[A love letter to the craft and romance of film and fate in front of—and behind—the camera from the award-winning author of Hold Still.

A wunderkind young set designer, Emi has already started to find her way in the competitive Hollywood film world.

Emi is a film buff and a true romantic, but her real-life relationships are a mess. She has desperately gone back to the same girl too many times to mention. But then a mysterious letter from a silver screen legend leads Emi to Ava. Ava is unlike anyone Emi has ever met. She has a tumultuous, not-so-glamorous past, and lives an unconventional life. She’s enigmatic…. She’s beautiful. And she is about to expand Emi’s understanding of family, acceptance, and true romance.]

The cover is nice but the summary is what interested me because (a) the book is clearly diverse, (b) it’s also different from the usual YA contemporaries, and (c) it seems to have an element of mystery. (I’m still reading this book and I’m loving it so far!)

Phase 3 – Sweet Talk: A book with great writing

8490112

The writing is brilliant – BRILLIANT I tell you! I simply devoured this fantasy.

Phase 4 – First Date: A first book of a series which made you want to pursue the rest of the series

12558285

I couldn’t not obsess over this book series after that amazing first book. Splintered fulfilled all my expectations and more. It is PERFECTION.

Phase 5 – Late night phone calls: A book that kept you up all night long

Books never keep me up all night. I’m very strict about getting 10 hours of sleep and all that…but there was that one series which managed to keep me up reading.

10

Phase 6 – Always on my mind: A book that you could not stop thinking about

24719666

The author published two or three chapters every week on Wattpad. As a result, I would constantly check my wattpad library for updates to the book. I don’t obsess over most books this way because the entire book is right there on my Kindle but The Dead List was still being written as I read it.

Phase 7 – Getting Physical: A book in which you love the way it feels

Unfortunately, I rarely get physical (with my books) these days because I read on my Kindle..but there was that library book I kept stroking.

12813630

Phase 8 – Meeting the Parents: A book in which you would recommend to your friends and family

11366397

This was an amazing book and I originally wrote it off as a cliche dystopian…but then I read the blurb and realized that this book would be anything but cliche.

Phase 9 – Thinking about the future: A book or series that you know you’ll re-read many times in the future

I rarely re-read books because there are so many books I want to read first. But if I were to re-read something, it would probably be the Kane Chronicles because I have hard copies of the books (and I’ve already re-read them three or four times now).18216364

Phase 10 – Share the love!!! Who would you like to tag?

Anyone who wants to do the tag! 😀 Have fun!

‘Would You Rather’ Book Tag

would you rather book tag

I saw this tag at smalltown bookworm and decided I just had to try it.

Would you  rather… Drop your favourite book into the toilet OR watch it fall into a wood chipper?

say-what-anchorman

I guess I’d say toilet because I could probably rescue it straight after.

Would you rather… read only 1 book a year but remember everything OR read 100 books a year but remember nothing?

Probably 100 books because even if I don’t remember anything, it was fun while it lasted!

Would you rather… Read only the first page of a book OR read only the last page of a book?

LAST PAGE. I must know what happens. If I’m not reading on my Kindle, I often check the back pages of the book I’m reading because I’m curious. I’ve spoiled a lot of books for myself this way but if it’s a good book, I won’t give a damn and keep reading anyway.

Would you rather get locked in a library OR get locked in a bookstore?

I think I would feel a lot safer being locked into a library because…I don’t know it’s public? But libraries tend to be bigger than book-stores and I would probably freak out. It’s decided. LIBRARY!

Would you rather… Drop your book in a lake OR accidentally set it on fire?

Either way, it would be irreparably damaged. But I’ll pick FIRE because I wouldn’t jump into that lake but I could at-least put out the fire.

giphy

Would you rather… Read a book with a cliffhanger ending OR read a book with a heartbreaking ending?

Heartbreaking ending because at-least I have closure then. But cliffhangers are only bad when the next book hasn’t been released.

Would you rather… Have the book’s ending spoiled OR never know what happens

SPOILERS PLEASE! I know most people hate spoilers but I am pretty indifferent toward them..Except if it means not knowing what happens because I MUST HAVE CLOSURE.

closure-drunk-dial-friends-gif

Would you rather… read only one genre forever OR never repeat the same genre after reading it once?

Read only one genre! If I had to pick one, it would have to be either contemporary or fantasy. The thought of never getting to read more than one contemporary or fantasy book is just… yea no, I can live with just one genre but not hopping around.

Would you rather… Read a book where the main character is killed off OR read a book where the love interest is killed off?

I guess it would depend on which character is worse. Sometimes I hate the love interest, sometimes I hate the MC. But okay, if they were both 100% awesome…I’d rather see the love interest go because I’m going to be more attached to the MC since the book is from their perspective.

tumblr_inline_mkctde1mBB1qz4rgp

Would you rather… Read a book that’s missing the middle chapter OR read a book that’s missing the first and last chapters?

I think reading the first and last chapters would at-least paint a clearer picture for me than just reading the middle chapter…so I’d rather read a book that’s missing the middle chapter.

Would you rather… love a book everyone hates OR hate a book everyone loves

From experience, it’s so much nicer loving a book that everyone hates because I LOVE THE BOOK.

belle books

Would you rather… loan a book to a friend who’s known to ruin books OR drop a book in a pit of snakes?

I think I’d at-least stand a chance of getting my book back from that friend…..but a pit of snakes? Sorry so not jumping in there!

Would you rather…. Be stuck on a deserted island without a book OR be stuck in a library full of books in a language you can’t read

Library full of books in a language I can’t read! Why, you ask? Well maybe I’ll be able to learn that language AND I find being surrounded by books comforting (which is why I LOVE libraries!).

tumblr_lxyxxivvb01qm6oc3o7_250

Would you rather… Bring only 1 book on a 12 hour flight OR bring an e-reader with only 10% left on a 4 hour flight?

Bring only one book on a 12 hour flight. Maybe it’s blasphemy to say this but I usually watch more TV than I read books on flights. For some reason, I find it hard to focus.

Would you rather… Find out your best friend hates your favourite book OR share a favourite book with your worst enemy?

I’d rather find out my best friend hates my favorite book. Everyone has their own opinion. I don’t really care as long as she doesn’t try to deface my copy of the book or anything. Also, I’m usually the one who hates my friend’s favorite book.

giphy

So that was easy! No I’m joking…it was awfully hard – you should walk away while you still can!.Too late! I TAG YOU!
