the mid-year book freakout tag

Okay I know I’m late to this but HELLO EVERYONE. I wasn’t tagged but I decided to participate after seeing this tag around the blogosphere. (Also, Jasmine @ Jasmine’s Reading tagged everyone who hasn’t done this tag yet so thank you Jasmine!) I think the tag was originally created by Chami and Ely. And I just wanted to spread some love to bloggers I follow who did this tag so here are some blogs you should check out (I linked to their book tag post!): A Frolic Through Fiction, This Dark MaterialLibrae Paints Pages, Forever and Everly, A Whisper of Ink, Free Perspectives, and Paper Fury.

#CakeFlavouredBooks Tag

Holland

Hello everyone!

So last month, Cait @ Paper Fury did a #CakeFlavouredBooks Tag (which is taken from #bookstagram btw) and made me very hungry. Today, I’ve decided to join in on the fun and try it too!

(Quick note: all images of cake were taken from Unsplash, StockSnap.io, or Pexels. Some images link to the original photographer. And I’m sorry if the cake was not accurately chosen!)

Bookish Links I Love (1)

This post is basically a bunch of shout-outs to posts (and usually blogs) I love. Next post will probably be featuring my follower’s blogs (I’m excited!).

Book Reviews

  • Rashika discusses how Court of Fives disappointed her. I was kind of excited for this one but now I’ve taken my expectations down a notch (I can adapt!).
  • Aasma finds To All The Boys I’ve Loved Before to be a light and relatable read.
  • Cait gushes over The Wrath and the Dawn and I agree with everything she says as always.
  • Olivia reviews and recommends Heir of Fire to fans of high fantasy books.
  • Alise confesses that at first she didn’t “get” The Ocean at the End of the Lane.
  • Emily thought Never Alway Sometimes was super cliched even though it tried hard not to be cliche.

Book Hauls/Discussions/Interviews/Tags/Other Awesome Stuff

  • Aimee interviews Sarah Ockler and hosts a giveaway (which is still open!!). The interview itself is pretty awesome especially since I absolutely loved The Summer of Chasing Mermaids.
  • McKenzie does the Reading Habits Tag (and I approve of her answers).
  • Jess participates in Stacking the Shelves and reminds her readers that she doesn’t read all the books she gets
  • Skylee does the Ultimate Book Tag and, in the process, introduces me to a new word: hiraeth.
  • Blaise participates in #TBRTakedown 2.0
  • Emily discusses reading slumps and blogging breaks

MID-YEAR BOOK FREAK OUT TAG

mid-year-book-freak-out I was tagged by Jess @ Princessica of Books to do the Mid-Year Book Freakout Tag. Sooo here I am! My Goodreads challenge goal was to read 250 books this year and so far I’ve managed to read 132 (you can see what I’ve read here). A majority of those books are YA novels but I’ve also managed to binge-read quite a lot of comics.

1. Best book you’ve read so far in 2015.

This is tough! 2015 has been such a great year so far (in terms of reading) because I’ve enjoyed so many of the books I’ve read. I’d probably go with A Court of Thorns and Roses by Sarah J. Maas or A Darker Shade of Magic by V. E. Schwab.

2. Best sequel you’ve read so far in 2015.

The Winner’s Crime by Marie Rutkoski. I’ve been reading a lot more new releases (which are often the first book in a series) or standalones so I haven’t been reading that many series.

3. New release you haven’t read yet, but want to.

Okay I have tons of new releases I want to read but fine..I’ll pick a couple. Delicate Monsters by Stephanie Kuehn and Wicked by Rhiannon Thomas are on the top of my “books to buy ASAP” list.

4. Most anticipated release for the second half of the year.

Queen of Shadows by Sarah J. Maas. I actually haven’t even started Heir of Fire yet (mostly because it’s SO LONG and I’m not feeling like committing). But I’m planning on reading Heir of Fire sometime soon because I want to finish it during the holidays when I have plenty of time to read.

5. Biggest disappointment.

The Murder Complex by Lindsay Cummings or Alienated by Melissa Landers. The premise for both books seemed great but the actual books weren’t quite so great..

6. Biggest surprise.

The Kite Runner by Khaled Hosseini. The book was assigned by my Humanities teacher and (for the most part) I find books assigned at school to be a bit boring. Fortunately, I ended up enjoying The Kite Runner.

7. Favorite new author.

V. E. Schwab! Technically she’s not new but I only got around to reading her books this year.

8. Newest fictional crush.

TAMLIN from ACOTAR!!! (he’s mine ladies, back off!)

9. Newest favorite character.

Simon from Simon vs The Homo Sapiens Agenda.

10. Book that made you cry.

Few books have the ability to make me cry. But I Was Here by Gayle Forman really wrecked me. Oh gosh you guys, that book reminded me why I read (to experience the world through the eyes of different characters).

11. Book that made you happy.

The Girl at Midnight by Melissa Grey. It’s a unique fantasy book that features awesome characters and I was just shipping everyone. It was awesome.

12. Favorite book to film adaptation you saw this year.

The Maze Runner! I really enjoyed the book and I was worried the adaptation would suck. BUT I ended up loving it! The special effects were amazing and I was so happy to finally get to “see” what I’d read and obsessed over so long ago.

13. Favorite post you have done so far in this year.

Probably the Beautiful People :: July Edition post. For a while now, I’ve really wanted to talk more about my writing on this blog but I was wrestling with some self-doubt. Publishing that post felt like a big step for me because I was finally ready to share that part of my life on this blog. I don’t know why it was such a huge deal to me because I’ve been posting work on writing websites like Figment and Wattpad but my blog has always gotten more readers/views/etc. than my profiles on those websites probably do..So I was nervous.

14. Most beautiful book you’ve bought so far this year.

22840182

15. What books do you need to read by the end of the year?

I’m trying to get through a lot of my “most anticipated” releases for 2015 because I just like knowing what’s going on (especially since many of them have tons of hype surrounding them). So yes I have books like Winter by Marissa Meyer and Heir of Fire by Sarah J Maas on my list but I’m a mood reader so I’m always re-organizing my tbr for the week every week.

The Monthly Recap #2

The Monthly Recap

Hi everyone,

I’m sorry for posting this recap so late but I forgot to schedule it before I went to India. Anyway, last month was pretty eventful! School ended, report cards came out, and I traveled around Europe for two weeks with my parents. (Oh yea and my grades were pretty good so I was more-or-less pleased with my report card.) Europe was amazing (even though I experienced heavy jet-lag once I got home). I got to travel to Rome, Venice, and Florence in Italy. I also stayed a couple of days in Austria and Germany. I don’t think you guys noticed the difference though because most of the posts, I scheduled, published on time.

P.S I Still Love You by Jenny Han

The Winner’s Crime by Marie Rutkoski

The Girl At Midnight by Melissa Grey

The Witch Hunter by Virginia Boecker

They Call Me Alexandra Gastone by T.A. Maclagan

Out of all these books, I enjoyed The Winner’s Crime and The Girl at Midnight the most. I read both of these books a few months ago but they were so good, I just had to write up reviews for them. If you haven’t read them yet, I’d say you’re missing out.

A Popular Book or Series That You Didn’t Like

19063

I actually got so bored, I stopped reading about halfway through this book. That was a few years ago but I haven’t tried it again since because I’m pretty sure my taste in books hasn’t changed that much.

Popular Book or Series that Everyone Hates But You Love

Panic_HC_JKT_des4.indd

Now that I think about it…I’m kind of realizing that I mostly “follow the crowd” in terms of what I read. Most of the books I’ve read have such good avg ratings on Goodreads…except for Panic by Lauren Oliver. I’m not sure if it counts as a popular book but Lauren Oliver is a New York Times Bestselling Author..so there’s that! I loved this book so much but the avg rating on Goodreads is pretty low at a 3.57 (but I gave it 5 stars).

Popular Book Genre You Hardly Reach For

I will have to agree with the folks at Novel Ink and say Historical Fiction. (History is also my least favorite subject.)

A Popular or Beloved Character that You Didn’t Like

6931356

I did not like Bianca’s character (and I DNF the book).

A Popular Author that You Can’t Seem to Get Into

13574417

There was so much hype about this book and so when I finally did get around to reading it… I was pretty disappointed! The author’s writing style also wasn’t really working for me.

A Popular Book Trope that You’re Tired of Seeing

Probably the “evil/clingy/psycho/jealous/stalkish ex-girlfriend” trope. It would be great to see more stories where the break-up doesn’t mean the end of any positive relationship between the boyfriend and girlfriend.

A Popular Series that You Have No Interest in Reading

13496A Game of Thrones has amazing ratings on Goodreads but for some reason, I just don’t feel interested in reading it. That might change, I guess, but for now I know it’s not going on my tbr.

Show/Movie Adaption that You Liked Better Than the Book

6931356There are few cases where this happens to me but in case, I found the movie a lot more interesting to watch. I still didn’t like the character but she seemed like a toned down version of Bianca in the book. There is also so much less sex which is what annoyed me in the book. I mean, not all teens are super horny!
