writing things i tried did this year:
- I made a writing blog! So far I’ve only posted poetry but once I’ve finished editing a few short-stories, I’ll probably be sharing those too. (Oh and I share poetry on ello as well!)
- Some of my poetry was published by literary magazines (ie. Scrittura).
- I tried to do NaNoWriMo..and only managed to write 18K words..
I feel like I haven’t accomplished that much this year but that kind of makes sense because 10th grade has been busy and stressful and I have no idea what I’m doing most of the time.
I know I’m going to be getting busier next year…but I may as well set a few goals for myself, the most important one being to finish everything I start. I know that sounds pretty easy.. but the truth is that I haven’t finished any of my novels yet.
writing goals
- Finish the first draft of Vivid.
- Start writing & posting (more) chapters of Deadline on wattpad.
- Maybe draft another novel for NaNoWriMo
(possibilities…)
If I do try writing another novel, here are the retellings I will be choosing from:
- Retelling based on the Ramayana (a Hindu epic I was absolutely obsessed with as a child). It would be from the perspective of Sita and I’m probably going to
messexperiment with the storyline. - Lesbian sleeping beauty retelling. I doubt nobody has written this before but I think I could find ways to make it more interesting/original (maybe make it more modern?)
- Gender-bender retelling of Little Mermaid or Cinderella. I’ve actually never read one of these but I think it would be fun to write.

I’m so impressed – it must be really hard to balance writing with high school. But I think writing is hard to balance with a lot of things and you just have to make time for it. Good luck with all your goals!

Vivid’s a good name for a novel- I hope you can finish! I understand the difficulty of finishing everything you’ve started; it’s so easy to begin a project and be so motivated and inspired, but then when it stops being new, it’s sometimes more like a chore. I’m trying to get better with that too, though!

Oh thank you! I have so much trouble coming up with a decent title and “Vivid” is honestly just a placeholder until I can come up with a better name.. I don’t think it captures the essence of my book anymore. But good luck staying motivated and finishing all your projects, Danni! 🙂

Well done, and good luck in 2016. My writing goals: 1. Finish my Masters. 2. Edit the 2 completed projects my agent is waiting for. 3. Finish at least a couple of the story/poem collections & novels in progress. 4. Submit at least 5 things somewhere. 5. Continue with 2015’s daily poem posting on my blog! (over 400 posts in 2015!)

I really want to win at NaNoWriMo too… I’m worried that I won’t get the time as I get older. Plus I’ve never finished anything that long in my life… becoming accustomed to writing poetry does that to a person, I think.
I’m trying to write a novel at the moment, and I’m at about 16,000 words, but my characters are losing their shine and my motivation is rapidly dying.

I followed you on Tumblr! I considered getting an ello but decided it would take up too much time — I’m in 11th grade (well, the equivalent) and basically dying, so I decided not to since I’m already hopelessly into Twitter, Pinterest, and Tumblr XD I would love to see that Ramanaya retelling, myself — but I think there is something incredibly valuable in revising a novel until you think it’s as good as you’ll ever get. I did that once before and my writing got so much better because I realised how fundamentally flawed my first manuscript was. Each rewrite / revision round makes my writing so much better. And in 2016 I am looking to revise both my mss and NOT start any new drafts — not sure whether I can stick to the latter though haha.

1. Write a short story and keep them short.
2. Succeed at NaNoWrimo
3. Finish my current work once it hurts less to do so.
